Canal du Midi boat hire The Canal du Midi is 360 km network of navigatable waterways linking the Mediterranean in the south and the Atlantic in the southwest of France. For details of a company we have used and would recommend email us. Hiring a boat for at least a week allows you to experience regional countryside and villages from another perspective. The boats are easy to navigate with the most difficult thing being getting through the locks but once you have mastered this it is quite fun. They accommodate between 4 and 12 people and generally come with everything you will need. No special licence is required and the companies give you instructions before you take off. The canals are usually wide and you can moor the boat pretty much whereever you please, in a village, next to a historical site or in the middle of nowhere. The cost of hiring a boat for the week depends on the size of the boat and the season but range between 750 and 2,000 euros which is quite reasonable compared to the cost of hotel rooms and other modes of transport you would otherwise be using during the day. They can be hired all year round but there are times during winter that parts if not all of the canal is closed for maintenance.
